- Close in proximity to Barcelona on the Mediterranean coastline
- Region is known for its sparkling wines as well as prominent reds and whites
- Divided into three separate areas: the Alt-Penedès (High Penedès), the Mitja- Penedès (Middle Penedès) and the Baix-Penedes (Lower Penedès)
- Lower penedès has a warm and mild climate due to the influence of the sea
- Traditional white grape varieties such as Xarel•lo and Macabeo
- Red varieties such as Tempranillo, Garnacha, Cariñena and Monastrell
- Central penedès or Middle penedès temperatures are lower (Xarel•lo and Macabeo are cultivated, the majority of these grapes being for cava production)
- Upper penedès, with altitudes of up to 800 metres (2600 feet) above sea level, possibly the highest vineyards in Europe
- In the Upper penedès a native white, the parellada variety is traditionally grown (Muscat d’Alexandrie, Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Chenin Blanc, have acclimated to the area)
