- Situated north of Madrid, but south of Rioja, in the middle of northern Spain on a sprawling plateau along the Duero River
- A climate marked by intensity and extremes (results in reds high in both intensity and strength)
- The heart of the Ribera del Duero is the Milla de Oro, or Golden Mile (a short strip of land hugging the Duero River which runs west toward Portugal, slicing through the Spanish wine regions of Toro and Rueda before becoming Portugal’s Duoro and Porto regions
- Major red wine producing region of Spain made predominately from the Tempranillo grape
- Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Garnacha, Malbec and Merlot are also grown, although these varieties are used almost exclusively for blending
