As many of you know, I have a wine problem. There, I said it. Since I’ve admitted this, I now have a decision to make. Am I to give up on my wine studies; walk away while I still have my sanity? After all, I worked to obtain my Intermediate and Advanced Certificates through the WSET (Wine and Spirits Education Trust). Do I really have anything else to prove? I’ve come a long way from buying my bottles of wine by how the label looked. Can I stay satisfied with the knowledge I have and not drive myself crazy for the next 2-3 years of intense wine and spirits studies? In short, the answer is a resounding “NO.”
So here I am, beginning a journey of wine immersion that I never thought was possible. Many people I talk with are completely unfamiliar with the WSET and the educational programs they promote. You can see information on the Diploma program online and the ultimate level, Master of Wine. The first exam is the Unit 2 exam, which seems a bit confusing to start with the second unit. Nonetheless, I will be taking this first exam, on Viticulture and Vinification, in December of this year in Philadelphia. After studying these subjects, I have come to the conclusion that, first, I am not a farmer and, second, I admire those who are. I also have obtained a new respect for all the decisions and effort that goes into making a wine.
With this commitment to my further studies, where does that leave my blog and the wine classes? Don’t worry, these will stay intact. Along with informational articles and reviews, I will be keeping you posted on my Diploma progress over the next couple years. In some respects, I am not drinking for just pleasure, but for the “thirst” of expanding my wine knowledge. That was corny! Don’t laugh at that. This blog will be a compilation of all my wine experiences, as I do better when I justify my bad habits.
I look forward to comments, criticisms, and words of wisdom. If those who have gone before me and attained this distinction have any pearls of wisdom, I welcome these. For those who are contemplating making this jump in wine education, I hope I can be an inspiration. Finally, for those who are just eager to learn more about these amazing beverages, I hope I can be a welcome adjunct to your wine and spirits education. Thank you for your kind words and support.
