- One sub-appellation, Ben Lomond Mountain, exists within the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA
- The mountains, the Pacific Ocean, and the nearby San Francisco Bay have a wide ranging affect on the appellation
- Several microclimates in the region-depending on the elevation of the land and on which side of the mountain it is on
- Most vineyards lie at the 2,000 foot level, although a few are planted as low as 800 feet
- Recognized for its diverse high-elevation microclimates, mountain terrain and low crop levels (creating concentrated fruit flavors)
- Most notable varietals are Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon
- Vineyards in this area have been severely affected by Pierce’s disease in the past
