- Chardonnay is the most planted grape varietal in the cooler, western portion of the valley
- Rhône varietals are more successful in the east (Syrah, Viognier, Roussanne, Grenache, Mourvedre and Marsanne)
- Botrytis cinerea can flourish here allowing some outstanding dessert wines to me produced
