I have recently agreed to start doing reviews for a few different brands. With all of these reviews, I offer a disclaimer.
Dark Horse Chardonnay
This is a classic style California Chardonnay with unctuous notes of peach nectar, rich apple blossom and a ‘toasted’ component that presents as cedar and kernel. The viscous mouth feel can be attributed to the malolactic fermentation, lees ageing and the use of the Viognier. The Viognier in the blend is also evident due to the slight blossom component in the background. The wine is surprisingly well integrated for the stated alcohol of 13.5%. For the price ($9 retail), it is a good buy and will certainly perform well when tasted next to similar priced chardonnay. I would hazard to say it has a price point of $12 / bottle. With so many equivalents in the market, this would be a successful hand-sell.
