- The only AVA in the state of Washington that is located west of the Cascade Mountains
- The AVA encompasses the entire Puget Sound area from the Canadian border to just south of Olympia
- Rainfall in the Puget Sound AVA ranges from 15 inches (38 cm) to 60 inches (152 cm) annually, most occurring in the winter
- Suited to cool climate varieties such as Madeleine Angevine, Madeline Sylvaner, Muller-Thurgau and Siegerrebe
- Some clonal varieties of Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris and Chardonnay growing well in warmer locations
- The Puget Sound region is further north than most of the growing regions in Europe, giving very long growing days during the summer thus giving the grapes longer hang time and ripen fully (develops more intense varietal characteristics)
- Temperatures are moderated by the ocean and the Puget Sound so the region doesn’t have the extreme temperature swings found in the Columbia Valley
- A good comparison in Europe to the Puget Sound might be the Loire valley, near Nantes (Muscadet), the Northern Rhine valley in Germany, Champagne or Chablis
