• Located within Napa Valley AVA and centered around the town of Rutherford
• The Rutherford AVA was established in 1993
• The Rutherford bench soils are primarily gravel, sand and loam, and are dominated by volcanic deposits and Franciscan marine sediment (Rutherford Dust)
• The soils are very well draining and particularly ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon, for which this area is world renown
• This AVA averages a bit warmer than Oakville and Stags Leap District
• Western bench area is cooler, with less late afternoon sun, tempered by afternoon marine winds
• Well known wineries include Beaulieu Vineyard, Caymus Vineyards, Frogs Leap Winery, Tres Sabores, Niebaum Coppola and Quintessa
