- Located in the Central Valley of California, at the northern edge of the San Joaquin Valley along San Francisco Bay
- Bounded on the west by Interstate Highway 5 and to the east by the political borders for the adjacent El Dorado, Amador, and Calaveras Counties
- Gained approval as a designated wine growing area in 1986
- Divided into seven distinct AVAs in 2006: Alta Mesa, Borden Ranch, Clements Hills, Cosumnes River, Jahant, Mokelumne River and Sloughhouse.
- Has a Mediterranean climate with warm days and cool nights
- The soil varies but is mostly a deep loam that occasionally is covered with large rocks, similar to the French region of Chateauneuf du Pape
- Best known for its old vine Zinfandel
- Also produces a large quantity of Merlot, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sauvignon Blanc
