• Located 28 miles (45 kilometers) east of Cape Town and surrounded by the Helderberg, Simonsberg and Stellenbosch Mountains

• Receives some climatic influences from nearby False Bay
• Soil types range from decomposed granite on the hillside near the mountains to sandy alluvial loam in the valleys near the rivers
• The seven wards of Stellenbosch are: Banghoek, Bottelary, Devon Valley, Jonkershoek Valley, Papegaaiberg, Polkadraai Hills and Simonsberg-Stellenbosch
• Well known for their red wine production, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinotage and Shiraz
• White wine production focused on Chardonnay and Sauvignon blanc which are often blended together
• Western areas of Stellenbosch, such as Botterlary and near Elsenburg also includes a sizable portion of Chenin blanc
