- Name means ‘pearl’ in Dutch
- Lies to the north of Stellenbosch, and is bordered by the town of Wellington to the north east, and the mountains of the Groot and Klein Drakenstein and Franschhoek ranges to the south east
- The overall climate in is warm with a Mediterranean influence
There are three main types of soil in the Paarl wine district:
1. Along the Berg River, the vines are grown on the sandy soil of Table Mountain sandstone
2. On the mountain slopes around Paarl and in the south east the soil is decomposed granite
3. In the north east it is Malmesbury shale
- The wine producing wards within the Paarl district Wine of Origin (WO) are; Franschhoek Valley, Simonsberg-Paarl, Voor Paardeberg and Wellington
- Traditionally a white wine region, but with its Mediterranean climate and terroirs it’s now focusing more on reds
- Cabernet Sauvignon, port and Shiraz wines have established Paarl’s place on the global wine map
- Petit Verdot and Malbec are now winning awards here
