• The Atacmana region is extremely hot and dry, as most of it is covered with the Atacama Desert
• Most viticulture in Atacama is concentrated in a thin strip along the coast, where there is sufficient access to water, and the cooling breezes of the Pacific Ocean
• Prolific producer of Pisco, a brandy-like spirit which has been distilled in Chile since the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors in the sixteenth century
• Important source of table grapes
